Muhammadiyah (not) Part of DIY Privileges

Years between 2009-2011 there is a reasonably strong narrative of how Muhammadiyah was involved in the discourse of the privilege of DI Yogyakarta. It is said that history has made Muhammadiyah a part of Yogyakarta’s opportunity inevitable. As the historical record, Muhammadiyah and Sultanate of Yogyakarta Sultanate have particular proximity that is existence of Muhammadiyah community which is in banteng that is Kauman village. Even Kyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan, besides being the son of an Abdi Dalem Putihan who has a close relationship with the Yogyakarta Palace, is also rumoured that he is a messenger of the Yogyakarta palace that is directly sent by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana VIII to perform the second hajj. Another historical argument is about the role of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta has supported the independence of Indonesia and declared to join the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, release the status of the ‘independent’ kingdom, and become an integral part of Indonesia.
The position of Muhammadiyah is, in fact, a standard position even Muhammadiyah is not incorporated in any social movement for the mobilisation of its congregational support. The critical argument is what has been going on in Yogyakarta, the Sultanate of Yogyakarta is not a monarchy and can run well and supported the people of Yogyakarta. Such a practice is not regarded as a communist system but is seen as a model of local democracy. This argument is also commonly discussed in various forums in Yogyakarta as well as at the national level, in Senayan.
Not part of the privilege
Sri Sultan revealed that Muhammadiyah was born in Yogyakarta and Muhammadiyah existence is very influential in the progress of Yogyakarta from various fields. Also, Muhammadiyah has been an inseparable part of the Yogyakarta Palace. The real evidence of Muhammadiyah is the central pillar of Yogyakarta with the existence of Muhammadiyah schools and universities spread across DIY. In addition to education, from the aspect of social service, Muhammadiyah’s contribution so far has been outstanding, and of course, the birth of Muhammadiyah in Yogyakarta is an inseparable part of the Royal Palace. The position of Muhammadiyah seems to be ‘dipangku’, so it has automatically become part of the ‘feudalism’ support carriage – the appointment of the governor and deputy governor for the reigning king.
After four years of running UUKY (2013-2016) with a privileged fund (Danais) that does not seem a bit Muhammadiyah does not show enthusiasm at all to utilise the scheme of details for the activities of the association.
