Millennial voters who are the basis of youth are one of the important milestones in the implementation of simultaneous elections in 2019. Simultaneous elections in 2019 which are held in the next few weeks are a big stage which is predicted as a political battle not only in conventional ways but with use information technology in the form of social media to attract young people.
Seeing this phenomenon, Master of Government Affairs and Administration (MIP), Government Affairs and Administration (IP), and Government Affairs and Administration Laboratory (Lab. IP) UMY held a Public Lecture with the theme “Social Media and Millennial Voters”.
The activity held on Friday (8/3) in the Amphitheater Room of the 4th Floor of UMY Postgraduate Program was attended by around 150 students. The speakers who attended the event came from the Commissioner of the KPU DIY Wawan Budiyanto, S. Ag, M.Si. and the Lecturer of the Government Affairs and Administration UMY Tunjung Sulaksono, S.IP., M.Si.
Present as a moderator, David Efendi, S.IP., MA and also the Lecturer in the Government Affairs and Administration UMY, said that there were around 70-80 million voters in this simultaneous election in 2019 from the millennial generation with ages 17 to 35 years. “The connection and political irrelevance of the millennial group is, of course, an important study. Why? Because the millennial generation is not just a matter of being born but is about political statistics, “said David.
The phenomenon of millennial voters gives a variety of political reactions, especially changes in various campaign media which were initially conventional only by using billboards, banners, and posters. Especially in the 2019 elections, the media are used to attract young group voters massively using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Line, Instagram, and so on.
The reach and intensity of the campaign by using social media are able to enter very private spaces, especially for the millennial generation. This was stated by the alumni of the Government Affairs and Administration UMY Moch Edward Trias Pahlevi, S.IP and also the Komunitas Independen Sadar Pemilu (KISP) Coordinator at the presentation session on the results of research related to social media and millennial voters.
Then Edward conveyed that there were at least 6 social media popular among millennials, such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Line, Snap Chat. The three most popular social media are Instagram with 86, 75% because of its insta story, Facebook which is more interactive (63.75%), and WhatsApp which is a media gathering in the group at 65.5%. This opportunity is not just passed away for political actors to attract voters. This is the result of research conducted by MIP UMY in collaboration with KISP. (Fs/Azk).
