American Students Visit IGOV-UMY

20150928_143344-600x400UMY’s International Program of Government Studies (IGOV) on Monday (28/9) received visits from 13 students from the United States under the “Where There Be Dragons” organisation, with three lecturers. The visit is in the framework of a 3-month semester program conducted in Indonesia with details of one month living in Yogyakarta then one month later in Flores, and lastly in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi. During their existence in Yogyakarta, they will follow the programs that have been scheduled by IGOV UMY.
One of their lecturers, Rachel Russell, explained that during their time in Indonesia, they wanted to learn about leadership, culture, language, government issues, and religion in Indonesia. He also revealed that Yogyakarta was the first city they came to upon arrival in Indonesia. Their arrival in Yogyakarta has been from Thursday (24/9) to 18 October. “Before to UMY, they have given us orientation related to Yogyakarta condition, weather and some other things. Dragons itself is the first time to undertake a study program abroad. We hope to improve students’ understanding of emerging issues in the countries they visit directly, “he said.
Rachel also added that she was pleased to be in Yogyakarta because she saw the city of Yogyakarta is a fantastic city, with many performances of music every day. Also, he also saw the campus of UMY as a beautiful campus and happy to work with IGOV UMY during the execution of their program.
Director of IGOV UMY, Dr Eko Priyo Purnomo added the American students would be assisted in their existence in Jogja. “Every one student will be accompanied by one UMY student. This program aims to introduce Indonesia deeper, and also introduce IGOV UMY to foreign students, “he explained.
Eko added, thirteen students will be brought to the cities, rural and coastal areas, to then they study the life of people of Yogyakarta with different backgrounds. “During the Jogja, they will be more plunge into the field by looking directly at the life of Jogja people. They will be deployed to see agriculture in Yogyakarta, culture and community background, “he explained. After plunging into the field, Eko added, the international students will be collected in class to discuss then the results of the studies they get.
By being a companion for international students who are studying in Yogyakarta, IGOV UMY Director hopes to introduce IGOV UMY to international students and better known by the international community. He also expects that IGOV UMY students will be more courageous to be able to communicate with international students related to English lessons during their classes. “This is also the second time IGOV UMY as a companion of foreign students from America.
