DSCN0109Yogyakarta-20/10/2015. Knowledge is something that is very important in life compared with other sources of economic power. It can be seen from the benefits gained by Facebook compared with Boeing company earnings. As a considerable aircraft company, driven by tens of thousands of employees, with branches of firms in various countries, it is still Boeing lost by Facebook is only moved by a handful of people in a limited room. “Nowadays, in the economic process, knowledge, education, skills, and abilities are the greatest wealth” explains Kneeth.
That is one of the opening points presented by Kenneth S. Moore, the officer for strategy and development of Universitas Sampoerna Jakarta, in a public lecture held by the International Program of Governmental Studies (IGOV) in Minitheatre building of Paskasarjana Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY). Kneeth, who is American, insists that if education is done correctly, then knowledge will be a significant force for nation-building. “I believe that Knowledge capital is the primary driver of economic growth and well-being,” said the PhD candidate from the Melbourne University.
In addition to Kneeth, another speaker was Dr Mega Hidayati, MA, IGOV lecturer and Paskasarjana UMY. According to the era of globalisation, the education system should see the challenges and changes that occur globally. So that both students and lecturers at the University must get out of the barriers that limit it from the global association, especially the limitations of language. “Global education is education that opens people’s eyes and minds to the realities of the globalised world and awakens them.” Mega.
Meanwhile, IGOV Director Eko Priyo Purnomo sees that in Indonesia the most critical issue of education is the high cost of tuition fees that must be issued by parents when entering their children into educational institutions. “I see that the issue is the main issue because education is left to the market mechanism, the campus is the same as the campus sustain, whereas the country should be much cheaper,” he said.
The public lecture is a series of routine activities held by IGOV collaboration with AIFIS (American Institute for Indonesian Studies) every month. The hope, public lecture activities by inviting experts and practitioners from America can open the horizons of students of Government Science, both regular and international classes, to be able to see and learn from different viewpoints and globalise.
